Common questions
What does this number actually cover?
Portuguese employment or freelance revenue earned here — IRS withholding and social security on that income. It does not include investments, rent, pensions, stock options, crypto, or salary paid by a company outside Portugal.
Do EU and non-EU expats pay different rates?
Not on a local payslip. Once you're tax-resident and earning in Portugal, the same IRS brackets and social-security rules apply. Your passport matters more for how you get here, foreign income, and whether you still file at home — not for this estimate.
Why 14 months for employed salaries?
Most Portuguese contracts pay 14 times a year: 12 regular months plus subsídio de férias (summer) and subsídio de Natal (Christmas). Enter your full annual gross package; monthly take-home in the breakdown is per payslip (annual ÷ 14).
When should I stop using the calculator?
If you have meaningful foreign income, might qualify for IFICI, are posted from another country, or hold a US passport — read the full tax guide and talk to a contabilista certificado before you rely on any number for a big decision.

Residency rules, IFICI, VAT, and when to hire a contabilista.
Ballpark only — not tax advice. Real withholding depends on dependents, deductions, foreign income, and your exact contract. IFICI requires an eligible profession and formal registration.
