Common questions
What does this number actually cover?
German employment or freelance income earned here, Einkommensteuer (income tax) and the standard social-insurance contributions on that income. It does not include investments, rental income, pensions, stock options, crypto, church tax, or salary paid by a company outside Germany.
Why no Steuerklasse selector?
Your Steuerklasse changes monthly withholding, not your real annual tax bill, that's settled when you file your return. This calculator estimates the annual outcome directly from the federal brackets, married filing status, and Ehegattensplitting, which is closer to what you'll actually owe than any single tax class.
Does Germany have a flat expat tax regime?
No, unlike Spain's Beckham regime or Portugal's IFICI, Germany taxes inbound workers on the same progressive scale as everyone else. What it offers instead is deductibility: relocation costs, commuting, home-office days, and more come off your taxable income when you file.
What is the Künstlersozialkasse (KSK)?
A subsidy for self-employed writers, designers, artists, and journalists that covers roughly the employer's half of statutory health, care, and pension contributions, cutting your own social-insurance bill nearly in half. Most other freelancers pay the full self-employed rate. Toggle it on if your work qualifies.
When should I stop using the calculator?
If you have meaningful foreign income, are posted from another country, pay church tax, or hold a US passport, read the full tax guide and talk to a Steuerberater before you rely on any number for a big decision.

Tax classes, the Steuer-ID, deductible expenses, and when to hire a Steuerberater.
Ballpark only — not tax advice. Real withholding depends on your Steuerklasse, church tax, dependents, and health-insurance provider; self-employed contributions vary by insurer and assessment basis. Talk to a Steuerberater before relying on this for a big decision.
